Is the Doctrine of the Trinity in the Bible?
Some people question the authenticity of the Trinity by stating that the word “Trinity” is not mentioned in the Bible.
However, our theology should not be based on words; instead, it should be based on the ideas behind the words.
It is essential for a Christian to believe in the Trinity because the Bible teaches that “there is one God” in the Old and New Testament scriptures.
As we read the scriptures, we get a progressive revelation that there are three persons; The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, who are each divine and distinct from each other.
We also see each of the three persons brought together in such a way that actively implies the Trinitarian nature of God.
The Bible teaches us that one God exists with three persons, so there is oneness concerning God’s nature and a distinction concerning the persons.
Let us look at some scriptures where the authors of the Bible refer to each of the three Persons of the Trinity;
(1) When Jesus commanded the apostles to make disciples and Baptize them:
Matthew 28:19 (NKJV)
19. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name (singular) of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
(2) Apostle Paul makes reference to all three persons in his conclusion letter:
2 Corinthians 13:14 (NKJV)
14. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
(3) Apostle Peter makes reference to it in his introductory statement:
1 Peter 1:1-2 (NKJV)
1. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
2. elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.
Here are three passages in Scripture, each bringing together the three Persons of the Godhead in an unmistakable way.
The mystery of the three persons in the Godhead is called the Trinity doctrine. Although this term is not used in the Bible, the teaching is present in seed form in the Old Testament and is revealed explicitly in the New Testament.
