Why evangelize if God elects?
The doctrine of election (that God has has chosen from the beginning who will be saved) raises a pertinent question as to whether evangelism itself is necessary or serves any purpose.
The common question being; “Why should we evangelize if God chooses who will be saved anyway?”
There are two main reasons why we evangelize. (1) because God commands us to do so and (2) because it is the only means by which God offers and provides salvation for His people.
While God is sovereign over salvation, believers still have a responsibility to spread the gospel to those who are lost.
(Matt. 24:14; 26:13; 28:19; Mark 13:10; Acts 8:25, 40; 14:7, 15, 21; 16:10; Rom. 1:15; 15:19–20; 1 Cor. 1:17; 9:16, 18; 15:1; 2 Cor. 10:16; 11:7; Gal. 1:8–9, 11; 2:2; Phil. 4:15; 1 Peter 1:12).
As we preach the gospel, God ultimately gives the gift of faith necessary to believe in Him (Romans 12:3; Eph. 2:8, 9).
Spurgeon preached a “whosoever will” gospel. Someone said to him, “If I believed like you do about election, I wouldn’t preach like you do.” Spurgeon’s answer was something like this, “If the Lord had put a yellow stripe down the backs of the elect, I’d go up and down the street lifting up shirttails, “finding out who had the yellow stripe, and then I’d give them the gospel. But God didn’t do it that way.”
“He told me to preach the gospel to every creature that ‘whosoever will may come.'” Jesus says, “and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” So, my friend, you can argue about election all you want to, but you can come. And if you come, He’ll not cast you out.
It is our duty to obediently spread the Gospel of Christ, knowing that the Son of God will never reject those given to Him by the Father.
Jesus came to earth for only one purpose, to fulfill the will of the Father who sent Him (John 6:38, 4:34, 5:30, 17:4 and Matt 26:39) and it is the Father’s will that Jesus will save all that He has given Him.
It is this reality that guarantees the salvation of the elect and their eternal security.
John 6:44 (NKJV)
No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
