What is the deal with God hardening people’s hearts? Is not our hearts hard enough, let alone have God harden it as well?

The hardening of hearts is mentioned in different instances in the Bible; however, we will look at one example and the one most debated about ~ The story of Moses warning Pharaoh in the book of Exodus.

In the book of Exodus, we see multiple occasions where God warned Pharaoh through Moses to let the Israelites free so they could worship God.

But, Pharaoh refused to do it. Eventually, it records that Pharaoh hardened his own heart, and finally, it says God hardened his heart.

Exodus 8:32 (NIV)

But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not let the people go.

When we look at the entirety of the Historical record in Exodus we can see how God’s sovereignty and human responsibility plays out in the world.

The book records ten times where God hardened Pharoah’s heart (4:21; 7:3; 9:12; 10:1, 20, 27; 11:10; 14:4, 8, 17)  and ten times where Pharaoh hardened His own heart (7:13–14, 22; 8:15, 19, 32; 9:7, 34–35; 13:15).

We first need to understand that within the Hebrew language, the “cause and effect timeframes” are not the same as the English language.

So when the Bible says something like ‘God hardened Pharaoh’s heart,’ it does not necessarily mean that God actively did something to make Pharaoh’s ‘soft’ heart – hard. In Pharoah’s case, God removed His spirit, grace, and influence that kept Pharaoh from fully hardening his heart which eventually led towards his natural disposition.

It is not as though God made Pharaoh an evil and vindictive person; he already was.

He was a brutal dictator overseeing the terrible abuse and oppression of the Israelites, who likely numbered over 1.5 million people at that time.

God was keeping Pharaoh from completely hardening his heart, and when God stepped back, Pharaoh did what He was naturally inclined to do.

God does not come into the world and say, “I am going to make this person do an evil thing,” but instead, it is God saying, “I am going to step back and let you do what it is you were naturally going to do anyway; make choices that you would make.”

You may also wonder how Pharaoh could be so foolish to witness God’s miraculous power yet still not listen to Moses. The reason is that Pharaoh had his mind made up long before the plagues began. He could not believe that someone was greater than him. This stubborn unbelief led to a heart so hard that even a major catastrophe could not soften it. In the end, it took the loss of his son to force him to recognize God’s authority. But even then, he wanted God to leave and not rule his country.

We must not wait for great calamities to drive us to God but must open our hearts and minds to His direction and heading his voice now.

Hebrews 3:15 (NKJV)

while it is said: “Today if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

The verse above reminds us that if you hear His voice, you should not harden your hearts. The consequence of us rejecting God over and over again leads to the hardening of our own hearts.

I want to encourage you that if your heart has been hardened in any specific area, you should go to God, and He will gladly soften it.

If you confess your sins to Him, He will soften your heart to live in alignment with Him.

if your heart has been hardened in any specific area, you should go to God, and He will gladly soften it.

In Genesis chapter 22, we come across this overwhelming passage where God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his long-awaited and promised son, Isaac.

This passage is appalling to many people who conclude that they cannot believe in a God who would ask somebody to do such a vile thing.

On a side note, the three main faiths (Islam, Judaism and Christianity) hail Abraham as the father of their faith. That being said, it is only through the Christian faith that we can find out the right reason and motive of God through this command.

When you read this story, Abraham does not even question God. Instead, he sets out in faithful obedience to sacrifice his only son Isaac.

Some people may even question Abraham for actually considering such an act. But we cannot impose a 21st-century worldview on an ancient cultural view; therefore, it is essential to understand the cultural context in which Abraham lived.

Abraham was called out of southern Mesopotamia and no doubt would have been familiar with child sacrifice in that part of the world. He was later called to go to Canaan (the future promised land), where child sacrifice was predominant. So Abraham, through his cultural lens, might have understood child sacrifice as the highest way in which one could show their devotion to their God.

So when God told Abraham to sacrifice his only son Isaac, he set out in faith-full obedience. And just as he was about to slay his son, God said to stop (as if to say I am not like the other Gods), I will provide a sacrifice.

Genesis 22:13-14 (NKJV)

13. Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.

14. And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

Two thousand years ago, God fulfilled this very promise by taking His own begotten son up Mount Calvary (the crucifixion), and this time the axe did not stop. God unleashed the wrath that was intended for our sins onto Jesus so that we could live.

God does not command human sacrifice but instead provided the ultimate sacrifice for us all because He loves us. Now, anyone who repents and believes in Jesus is promised eternal life.

John 11:25 (NKJV)

25. Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.

If we want to get deeper into the question, we can also ask if God has the right to command the death of anyone? And the answer is yes; in fact, God didn’t just tell Abraham to kill Issac – in the book of Joshua, He told the Israelites to completely destroy the Canaanites.

The fact of the matter is that no man has any right to live, let alone take another breath, because we have all sinned, and the wages of sin is death. So the fact that we even take another breath is God suspending the just punishment that we deserve.

Therefore, at any point, God commands the death of anyone; it would be within the framework of His righteousness, holiness and justice. But instead, God displays His patience and mercy by giving us common grace so that we are not punished the moment we deserve it.

God unleashed the wrath that was intended for our sins onto Jesus so that we could live.

The Bible not only says that God is a jealous God, but it also declares that one of His very names “is Jealous.”

Exodus 34:14 (NKJV)

14. (for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God),

On the one hand, the Bible says that jealousy is a sin, but if God is holy? How then can He be jealous?

Before we draft any conclusions, we first need to note that His jealousy is perfect as everything else about God.

  • God’s kind of jealousy is appropriate in the context of Him as our Creator and Father.
  • God’s jealousy is good in relation to His care and devotion as our protector.
  • God’s jealousy is warranted when He is defending His word and guarding His high honor as the sovereign Lord.

When God is jealous for us, He makes a strong, exclusive demand on us that we must treat only Him and no one else in all the universe as God.

Getting back to the verses on God’s jealousy, they all made in the context of idolatry, the ungratefulness, and the unfaithfulness of people, which in turn provoked a just and holy response from God who is jealous for the love and devotion of His people.

We should also move away from worldly definitions of jealousy and see things through God’s love for His creation. Yes, some jealousy is bad – It is destructive when a person gets upset over their spouse when they talk to someone of the opposite sex.

But another type of jealousy is good – For example, it is right for a man to demand that his wife treat him, and only him, as her husband.

Therefore, when the Bible speaks of God being jealous is mainly for His own glory. God always seeks to protect His honor and glory, and He will not share His praise with any man-made idols.

At the same time, God was so jealous for our devotion that He came into this world and died for our sins so that we can truly worship Him in spirit and truth.

God’s jealousy over us represents an honor worthy of our sincerest gratitude.

When God is jealous for us, He makes a strong, exclusive demand on us that we must treat only the Lord and no one else in all the universe as God.

The problem of hunger is real in our world today, and many children suffer from malnutrition.

People will often blame God for the number of starving children in the world and accuse Him of lacking the power or the care to provide for them.

On the other hand, the Bible teaches us that God is love, and Jesus Himself taught us that children are essential to God.

Matthew 18:10 (NIV)

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.

So what went wrong? On analysis of the amount of food available in the world right now, according to relief organizations and government agencies, there are enough resources to feed everyone.

The problem is not the lack of food available; instead, it is the accessibility to the food. The fault does not lie with God as there is enough food for the entire world, but the problem lies with the corrupt nature of man.

God has appointed us as trustworthy stewards of the world’s resources. As individuals, we often accumulate food or mismanage resources instead of seeing that other people are fed or provided for.

God is not responsible for man’s foolishness. Neither is He accountable for selfishness, greed, pride, hatred, hoarding, cruelty, spite, or any other sin that contributes to world hunger.

There is no unrighteousness in God:

Psalm 92:15 (NIV)

proclaiming, “The Lord is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.”

God does care for the children, and He proves this in that He sent His only Son into the world to redeem us from the curses of sin.

And now He prompts the followers of Christ to help relieve world hunger. Christian missionaries and agencies are acting as God’s hands and feet to feed hungry children all around the world, providing for their basic needs;

Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

God has appointed us as trustworthy stewards of the world’s resources

Why would a “loving God” send people to hell?

Firstly, we need to establish what hell is. Hell is separation from the grace of God because of our sin and continual rejection of Him and His love.

The Bible teaches that God did not create hell as a judgment for humanity but rather for the sentence of Satan and his angels.

Jesus said:

Matthew 25:41 (NKJV)

“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:

Many people wrongly believe that hell is a place created by God to scare people into doing good things. However, God’s heart is that none should perish and instead should come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:9 (NKJV)

The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Unfortunately, humans since the ancient days have chosen their sinful ways instead of God.

This is a sad reality, but God has not left us without hope; He makes salvation possible through Jesus.

God sent His Son Jesus to die for us so that everyone could have eternal life. When people reject Jesus, we confirm our decision to deny His calling and be separated in sin forever.

The below scripture puts it best.

John 3:16-18 (NKJV)

16. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

17. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

18. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

The above verse teaches us the following;

(1) God gave His son for our eternal life.

(2) God did not send His Son to the world to condemn us but to save us through Him.

(3) whoever does not believe in Jesus stands condemned already.

The following verse 19 puts an interesting spin on this;

John 3:19 (NKJV)

And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

When it comes to hell, it is not God’s rejection of us; rather, it is our rejection of Him because of the love for our evil deeds above everything else. We reject His light in love for darkness.

The real question isn’t why a loving God would choose to send someone to hell, but rather, why would someone choose hell over a loving God?

God sent His only son Jesus so that everyone can have eternal life.

A lot of people question why God would choose to create humanity and wonder if He was alone, and therefore, created people in His image to have a relationship with them.

The problem with this kind of reasoning would imply that something was lacking in God, but if He is a perfect self-sufficient being, how can there be a lack in Him? So was God lonely?

To answer this, we first need to establish that God did not need us. If God never created us, it would not lessen Him at all.

As Christians, we believe that God is triune, one God revealed in three distinct persons, the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.

All three persons co-eternal existed within the God-head before creation. There was already a perfectly loving and harmonious relationship within the Trinity.

God did not need to create us a group of rebellious, stubborn people – to feel better about Himself.

He created us so that He could invite us into that which was already established and existed within the Trinity.

God now calls for you and me to be part of His kingdom, and He extends this invitation to us through His one and only Son, Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:9  (NIV)

9. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Lastly, the Bible says that God is love; and love by virtue does not focus on itself but others. He populated the earth with people from whom He could express the greatest act of love: self-sacrifice.

And through Jesus, He could give us the greatest thing in the universe: fellowship with Him.

If God had never created us, it would not lessen Him at all.
