First off, there are essentials to the Christian faith we should believe in, like; Jesus being God in human flesh, salvation through faith in Christ, the virgin birth, and that God is Triune in nature.

Apart from these essentials, there are other issues that Christians can disagree on, and one of those issues is the age of the earth.

There are spirit-filled Bible-believing Christians who are persuaded that the earth is young and likewise others who believe that the earth is old.

Both sides have their explaining to do with regards to the science supporting the text, but this is an issue that Christians can disagree upon as an ‘in-house’ disagreement and not one that we should divide over.

Whether you are a young or old earth creationist, it all comes down to how you interpret the creation days in Genesis.

If the days in Genesis were consecutive 24-Hour periods, and if the earth was created on the first day – then adding dates as per the biblical genealogies reveals that the earth was created only thousands of years ago.

If the days were indeterminate or nonconsecutive in length, then the Bible does not reveal when the earth was created.

Both sides agree that the genealogies of Adam and Eve exist only thousands of years ago.

    Young-earth creationists (YCs) interpret the days as 24-hour, consecutive periods for the following reasons;

    • The days in Genesis 1 are consecutively numbered and comprised of an “evening and morning.”
    • Exodus 20:8-11 commands a literal week of six days of work and one day of rest based on God’s original creation/rest week. The weeks would seem then to be of equal duration.
    • According to Romans 5:12, “sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin,” but old-earth creationism would have animal death entering the world before the sin of Adam and Eve.

    Old earth creationists (OCs) argue against 24-hour creation days for reasons such as these;

    • The Hebrew word for “day” (Yom) is used in different ways in the creation account, which can vary based on interpretation in the text in context when translated. For instance, Genesis 1:5 refers to Yom only as daytime (daylight), not nighttime. Also, Genesis 2:4, literally translated, speaks of ‘the Yom that the Lord God made the earth and heavens.”
    • God’s rest on the seventh “day” has no evening and morning. Genesis 2:2-3 and Heb 4:3-11 portray this same Sabbath as continuing to the present time.
    • Adam could not have named all the birds and animals in 24 hours, according to Genesis 2.

Both sides believe they have strong arguments favoring their interpretation when rebutting each other.

Some YCs accuse OCs of compromising the Bible with evolutionary science. Some OCs charge YCs with undermining biblical credibility by generating false conflict between science and the scriptures.

Another good example to compare the two sides is in explaining the existence of dinosaurs.

    Both sides explain dinosaurs differently.

The OCs believers use standard scientific dating stating the dinosaurs existed 65 million years ago, and a comet or some other phenomenon wiped out their existence.

Young Earthers have a problem with the standard scientific carbon dating as they believe that the earth is 10,000 or 12,000 years old. So they would account for dinosaurs by saying that they lived with humans and were also on the ark with Noah. In addition, they state that the only type of animal that does not stop growing is a reptile, and considering human beings lived for around 600 to 900 years before the flood; the assumption is asserted that the rest of the animals also had a longer lifespan and would have been massive in size.

There is no stance that I will make right here, but there are two options that are presented to you, and you can decide what you think best fits the biblical understanding. Either way, the existence of dinosaurs poses no threats to the Christian faith any more than young or old earth poses for God as the Creator.

As stated earlier, the essentials of the faith matter.

On Judgment day, God will not ask you whether you believed in a young earth or old earth or in the dinosaurs. But what matters is if you accepted and put your trust in His son Jesus Christ who came to this world to redeem mankind.

On Judgment day, God will not ask you whether you believed in a young earth or old earth or in the dinosaurs. But what matters is if you accepted and put your trust in His son Jesus Christ who came to this world to redeem mankind.

The simple answer to this question of why Dinosaurs are not explicitly mentioned in the Bible is the same reason why it does not talk about the Great Wall of China, the pyramids of Egypt or even the Taj Mahal in India. It is not within the scope of the document.

Every book, no matter how big/vast, cannot tell you everything. Every book leaves out a lot more than it includes. For example, books on taxonomy and animals may not even talk about Dinosaurs.

So what is the scope of the Bible?

The purpose of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation is based on the central theme of mankind’s redemption from the bondage of sin and our path to salvation through Christ Jesus.

Simply put, the purpose of the scripture is to make you wise unto salvation.

    2 Timothy 3:15-17 (NIV)

    15. and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

    16. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

    17. so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

In conclusion, the Bible gives us a broad overview of the creation event, and then it takes us through events of one bloodline which, is the bloodline through which the Messiah would be born.

So the reason the Bible exists is to make you wise unto salvation; it is not meant to tell you everything about everything, in fact, no book could, all writing is selective.

The purpose of the Bible is to make you wise unto Salvation.

When it comes down to the Old Testament (OT) laws, a common miss understanding is that Christians are supposed to merely ignore/exclude the OT laws for ones that can be more commonly accepted in the 20th century.

To understand if the OT laws apply to us Christians today, scholars have categorized into the following three categories – Moral law / Ceremonial law / Civil law.

The Book of Leviticus (Old Testament) includes the famous list of laws which will be used as an example to answer this question.

    Ceremonial law

Explicitly related to Israel’s worship like the offering animal sacrifices and circumcision.

    • Its primary purpose was to point toward Jesus Christ; these laws are no longer necessary after Jesus’ death and resurrection, as we now have direct access to the Father.
    • While the ceremonial laws no longer bind us, the principles behind them to worship and love a holy God still apply.
    • The Pharisees often accused Jesus of violating the ceremonial law.

    Civil law

A guide for daily living in the days of Israel, like the requirement of wearing cross-fiber clothing, and Men commanded not to cut their hair.

    • As society and culture in the modern world are so radically different from the days of Israel, these guidelines cannot be explicitly followed.
    • However, the principles behind these commands are timeless and should guide our conduct.
    • Jesus demonstrated these principles by example by His daily living and conduct while on earth.

    Moral law

They are direct commands from God, such as the 10 Commandments.

    • These direct commands from God require strict obedience.
    • The moral law reveals the nature and the will of God, and it still applies today.
    • Jesus obeyed the moral law completely.

This segregation of the Jewish law into different classes is a man-made concept by scholars intended to understand better God’s reason / motive behind these laws and His nature.

Another approach used by scholars is to look at the Old Testament laws through the eyes of the New Testament. If it is repeated, then it something that Jesus has commanded and established through His teachings.

      Most importantly, the law was given for three main purposes;

      • as a reflection of who God is
      • as a guide to what God expects and for us
      • as a mirror to see how well we stand up to God’s standards.

The law reveals our shortcomings, and since we are unable to achieve its standards, it enables us to focus on looking onto Christ, who became the fulfillment of the law.

Jesus Christ not only raised the standards of the law to a higher level, but He also showed us that only He could fulfill them.

      Matthew 5:17 (ESV)

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

Jesus did not abolish any of the Old Testament laws. Instead, He raised them on a higher standard and showed that only He could fulfill them.

First, we need to establish that God is righteous and just and that His will is more significant than our understanding.

Although God wants us to receive all that our heart desires, God will not allow things that will oppose His will.

An often ignored aspect of prayer is that it is one of the means through which God achieves His ends and form part of what God will do. So we shouldn’t ignore prayer because it forms part of the means through which God works all His providential purposes.

The Bible describes a sovereign God who has ordained all things, including the end of everything, while also determining the means through which all things are to end.

      Now getting to the question, the Bible verse from where this question or understanding stems is from the following;

      Psalm 115:3 (NKJV)

But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.

So if God will do everything that He pleases, why should we ask Him to do what we want?

This type of reasoning is a fundamental misunderstanding of what prayer is.

Before we ask why pray? We should ask ourselves, why do we eat every day? Because if we do not, we are not going to enjoy a very long and fulfilling life.

Likewise, God has ordained the means through which we experience life, and that is through an intimate fellowship and conversation with Him through prayer.

Another reason why we should pray is because Jesus Himself prayed as a means to commune with the Father. Furthermore, He also taught His disciples to pray, and by example, He showed the essential focus of prayer was to be in accordance with God’s will.

      Matthew 6:9-10 (NKJV)

      9. In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

The primary goal of prayer is to get our hearts consistent with God and not the other way around.

While we are in this world, we are going to have some trouble, and things might not work out; however, situations and understandings change when we have God’s perspective on things and when we receive an understanding of His will through prayer.

CS Lewis, a famous Christian author, said it well: “I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time – waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God – it changes me.”

For example, when a person learns how to express his gratitude to God, that person will now become more and more aware of the hand of God (providence) in his life. Similarly, when a person spends their time confessing their sins, they are in effect keeping in front of their mind the holiness of God.

In conclusion, can our requests change God’s sovereign plan? Of course not. When God sovereignly declares that he will do something, all of the prayers in the world aren’t going to change God’s mind.

But God not only ordains the end, but He also ordains means to those ends, and as part of the process to bring his sovereign purposes to pass, He uses prayers of his people. And so we are to pray.

the primary goal of prayer is to get our hearts consistent with God

The COVID-19 virus has caused a lot of distress and fear in the world and among many Christians.

So how are we to respond as Christians?

Here are a few things to consider.

      The Bible

Use your free time at home to get closer to God by reading His word.
The Bible is God’s written words that reveal to us His nature and His eternal plan for our salvation. We can also learn more about the effects of sin in the world and our need for a Savior.

      The Government

The government is ordained by God.

      Romans 13:1 (NIV)
“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.”

Therefore, we are required to respect the measures, laws, and directives that have been given by them.
Pray especially for wisdom for the leaders to make the right decisions to control the spread of the virus and to manage the economy during these stressful times.

      Medical teams

Trust in the medical teams that God has provided.
Pray for protection, endurance, strength, and wisdom for those in the front line fighting the virus.

      Keep Faith not Fear

God has promised to protect you, and He will do just that.
Don’t give in to the plans of the enemy.
At the same time, we have to be wise about our choices. We can still have Faith and wash our hands or even sit at home. God does not want us to test Him – He will protect us, and sometimes that protection means giving you the wisdom to do the simplest of things like following basic human hygiene.

      Identify Idols in your life

With a lot of sport and music events being shut down, many people have felt an emptiness in their lives. Take time to reflect what matters to you the most and break any idols that may have replaced God.

      Jesus

Exalt the name of Jesus higher than COVID-19 and every other thing we face.
Victory comes when we exalt the name of Jesus.

Exalt the name of Jesus higher than COVID-19.
